house proud

I popped along to a House Proud installation last night. The series is part of
Melbourne’s Next Wave Festival
, and basically it’s artists teaming up to kind
of create an art exhibition in someone’s living room. Yep – it’s in someone’s
actual house. Art on the walls, punters wandering round with plastic glasses
of goon, and the family dog running about. The one I saw featured Miso and
Ghostpatrol, who I both fell in love with a little bit, particularly all the cute paper
designs and creatively vandalised books. Sadly, I only had time to take one quite
awful photo before my camera died – believe me it was better in the flesh! If you’re
in Melbourne over the next week or so, you can see for yourself. There’s four more
House Prouds to go: Friday May 23rd (Emile Zile), 6-9pm at 37 Rupert Street,
Collingwood; Sunday May 25th (Conrad Dudley Bateman), 2-6pm at 373 Howe
Parade, Port Melbourne; Tuesday May 27th (Kotoe Ishii), 6-9pm at 4/61 Little
Oxford Street, Collingwood; and Thursday May 29th (Rowan McNaught), 6-9pm
at 263 Wellington Road, Collingwood. It’s free and you get to have a secret sticky
beak at other people’s houses while indulging in a bit of culture. Thumbs up.

From 35mm to large format, pinholes to Hasselblads, plastic toy cameras to antique collectibles, UNSENSORED08 covers many styles and blurs the line between old and new techniques, demonstrating that film photography remains beautiful, simple, accessible and relevant in an era where digital has become the norm. The exhibition runs from 8th August – 20th August at the Collingwood Gallery, 292 Smith Street, Collingwood, Melbourne. The gallery is open 7 days a week Mon – Fri 11am-9pm, Sat & Sun 10am-5pm. BECI BECI BECI

Beci Orpin, mother of real kiddies and the lovely Princess Tina label – and perennial artsy heroine of frankie – is having a very special solo exhibition. Called Outside, Over There, the show balances between folkish nightmare, with roaming foxes, mysterious silhouettes and dancing mushrooms, and the cute animal characters, paper-cuts and craft of Beci's past. Fairytale narratives, animals galore and a big nod to craft: this exhibition will warm the cockles of your nostalgic heart and perhaps give you a little nightmarish chill too. Outside, Over There opens tonight in Melbourne then runs from August 23rd to September 14th at the Outre Gallery, 249-251 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne. But Sydneysiders are in for a treat too – your Beci Fest 2008 opens a week later on August 29th at Outre Gallery, 13A Burton Street, Darlinghurst.

the tour

With 25 issues under our belt, what better time is there to celebrate the best bits of frankie so far? In fact, our recent frankie fashion photography showcase in Sydney was so much fun that we’ve decided to take it on tour. Melbourne people have got a few days to recover after Spring Fashion Week, with the showcase of our favourite fashions, shoots and photographers coming to Curtin House on Thursday (11th September). There will be nibbles and drinks and the prettiest pages in print! We’d love to host you all, but the exhibition space is already very cosy. If you want to come along, subscribe to our newsletter and drop us a confirmation line here for a chance to win one of 25 tickets.

Pop 'Raw Eco Love' in the subject line here for a chance to win. Melbourne it is your day! (COMPETITION CLOSED)

Zoetrope

As you may be well aware, Melbourne Fringe Festival is on the way and this year Zoetrope is along for the ride. In the mood for a bit of a cackle and a hoot? Then hop along to Festival Club – Arts House, North Melbourne Town Hall (corner Queensberry & Errol Streets, North Melbourne). For $5 your mind and body will take a ride on the quirky and slightly bizarre, yet utterly hilarious train of physical theatre production that is Zoetrope. Times and dates scatter from here to there – 26th to 27th September, 2nd to 4th October, 9th to 11th October. Performances will tumble and turn every 20 minutes from 7pm. Bookings can be made online at Melbourne Fringe. (A nice place to spend some play time checking out the entire fringe program.)

recreate08

Proving that style isn’t all about high fashion, design students and Salvos stores are collaborating once again for this year’s Recreate Fashion Show. The students have been given a brief to build a collection from items found at Salvos Stores, which they then re-use and re-style into a selection of outfits for the catwalk showcase. This year’s diverse collections include Lucy Swift and Jess Eisenhauer’s Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Lauren Glasson’s Garden Tea Party and Venice Carnival Collection by Amy Falentine, plus lots more re-creations. If you’re in Melbourne you should check out the whole show on Tuesday 14th October at Ormond Hall, Prahran. Make sure you reserve your spot here. Ooh, and we have a double pass to give away. Email your details to here with Recreate in the header. (COMPETITION CLOSED)

a to z

Yesterday our lovely friend and frankie artist Catherine Campbell sent through this wee poster promoting her upcoming exhibition with fellow ladies Andrea Innocent, Eveline Tarunadjaja and Mel Stringer which is opening this weekend in Melbourne. I was just about to rewrite all the info up and then had a thought ... what a shame to not share this prettiness with everyone... so here it is ...

where the dry leaves fall

A fresh breeze of new artistic talent has fallen into Gorker Gallery, frankie and many of our hearts. Leah Bartholomew, fine artist slash graphic designer, is nothing short of a little bundle of quirk, love, and talent. If you’re in need of rekindling that childhood feel and touch, and you’re one of those lucky arty folk who know their hometown as Fitzroy or somewhere near, then this trip back in time is just a stroll, skip or ride away. Leah’s dry leaves have fallen right into Gorker Gallery, 395 Gore Street, Fitzroy. Opening night is tonight, but the exhibition will be continuing all the way through until 16th November.
