Hands up for New Zealand

The lovely lads of Cut Off Your Hands have a lot on their plate right now. A new album, You & I, is out October 4th, and then there’s an Australian tour in November, plus a frankie journalist asking them some puzzling questions... Here’s the result of our little chat with frontman Nick Johnston, anyway. Hope you like!

There are a fair few bands around at the moment with arms and hands in their name: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Mercy Arms, These Arms are Snakes. Why the hand fascination do you think? “Yeah, it’s kinda weird how band names all crop up at the same time, though I wasn’t aware of any of the above-mentioned bands in late 2005 when we came up with the name Shaky Hands. It seems the black so and so's are pretty popular of late: Black Kids, Lips, Mountain, Dice, Eyes, Flag, Keys...” What is your one, cannot-ignore, rush-to-the-dancefloor, must-move-when-it-comes-on-the-stereo song? “We normally DJ old garage and nuggets stuff, so anything of that R ‘n’ B ilk. Even the most mainstream of songs like ‘A Hard Day’s Night' will make the coolest of kids shake their tail feathers!” What was your favourite moment making the album You & I? Paint a little word picture for us. “My favourite parts were when our UK label would come into the studio and try and recommend changes or little things in the mix and [ex Suede guitarist] Bernard Butler, our producer, would just kinda stare at them with amazement, completely shut them down and, with utmost condescension, give them a few tips on what to do 'when you make a record'!” Flight of the Conchords, Lord of the Rings, Dave Dobbyn – are you the next big NZ ambassadors? “Everyone’s always wondering that same thing! When we first left NZ, it was all, 'Oh, you’re from Noo Zeeeelaand? I just love Lord of the Rings.' And now it’s all about, 'Do you know Jemaine and Bret?’" What do you really wish a journalist would ask you, and why? “I like it when a journalist has really done their research and can engage in a discussion about lyrics or recording processes in a way that doesn’t just feel like a question followed by quick answer. I like it when a journalist can avoid the obvious questions about how we met and stuff – there are stacks of those interviews on google that a journalist can find without having to ask the band!”

Cut off Your Hands are playing November 6th at the Gaelic Theatre in Sydney, the 8th at the Hi Fi Bar in Melbourne, the 14th at Fowlers Live in Adelaide and the 15th at the mighty Zoo in Brisbane. Tickets go on sale today and there’s a little special treat in store for gig-goers who are keen on getting some COYH action before the rest of the world cottons on. Fans can choose to purchase a pre-ordered digi version of the album with their show ticket and download it two weeks before its release. Plus, they’ll also get the physical album when it comes out so they won’t miss out on all the art and tangible good stuff that comes with the real thing. Slightly confusing – yes! Worth the troubles to get some fresh new music with your gig tickets – also yes!

m ward poster art

It's M. Ward Day! If you were lucky enough to nab some tickets in our giveaway, we hope you will have a lovely boogie for us. For those who weren't so fortunate, here's a little something to keep you smiling: the poster art. His pretty promo poster was designed by the one and only frankie gal, Beci Orpin. We didn't think it was actually possible to make Mr. Ward more attractive, but Beci has awed us yet again.

on a wim

Beards beards beards. The only better thing than a bearded man is a bearded man holding a musical instrument. And WIM has a whole band full of them! This Sydney five piece are as talented playing their instruments and writing catchy pop hooks as they are proficient at growing facial hair. In other words, they're pretty awesome. They're releasing their self titled debut album tomorrow, so if you're in the mood for some WIM-sical tunes (puns are nearly as good as beards!), give it a spin.
