Ever wondered where the tradition of carving a pumpkin for Halloween started? Well, wives in villages just outside London started the tradition, after becoming fed up with searching for their intoxicated husbands. They carved out a type of beet known as the punkie and put a candle in it to use as lanterns to help with their night searches. The men, with alcohol-fuelled imaginations, saw the lanterns and mistook them for “goolies” (the spirits of children who died before being baptized) and fled in terror. Ever since, the womenfolk, who got a huge kick out of their husband’s fears, continued the tradition with the children. If you’re celebrating Halloween this Friday, there’s more clever pumpkins carvings on Martha Stewart.
This is a cute idea if you have piles of unpaid bills, random bits of paper and lists etc lying around. Create a mini clipboard wall like Jessica from The Creative Mama.
There are many things that we endeavour to do 365 days of the year: shower, eat breakfast, brush our teeth, and try to smell the roses. We don't always manage to do all of these (although showering really is on the top of the must-do pile), but maybe that's because we're not blogging about it for the world to see. Bronwyn Bowerman is attempting to do a different craft project every day for a year. So far she has made whale pillows, felt necklaces and bunny pincushions - just not really ones, of course. You can follow her blog here, get inspired, and get DIYing. Just don't forget to also brush your teeth. Photo from here.
Not happy with your cereal in the morning tasting like toasted cardboard chips and rehydrated cabbage? Don't like raisins in your bowl of bran, but want more paw paw? Gluten-free, peanut-free and taste-free? We've found a website where you can create your own breakfast cereal: Muesli Mixer. Om nom nom. They tell us that there are seven quadrillion different combinations you can choose from. We're not sure if that's a real number, but then again, maths was never our strong point. However, eating is. Pretty picture from here.
